However, for companies registered under the pre-GST laws, it is still a major hurdle to shift to the new GST platform without adequate guidance. Even for companies that are newly formed, it can be quite tiresome and complicated to keep a track of the GST regulations applicable to them.
What is GST Registration?

GST Registration is a mandatory process for businesses that exceed a specified turnover threshold of Rs. 40 lakh, Rs. 20 lakh, or Rs. 10 lakh, depending on the case. This registration categorises them as regular taxable entities under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework.

Registration is compulsory for certain types of businesses. Operating without GST registration when required is considered a legal infringement, attracting severe penalties under GST law.

The process of obtaining GST registration typically spans 2 to 6 working days.

How to Register for GST in India? – Steps for GST Registration

GST registration in India requires adherence to particular prerequisites and submitting specific documents.

The process for GST registration in India is entirely digital and can be efficiently completed through a series of straightforward steps. Our team is adept at guiding clients through every phase of the GST registration process, from preparing and drafting necessary documents to submitting the entire application. Below, we outline the steps we follow to facilitate a smooth and trouble-free GST registration for our clients:

Step-1: Documentation
Preparation of documents is crucial and depends on your business type and activities. Ensuring these documents are ready in advance is vital to prevent delays during online registration. A comprehensive list of required documents is provided above.
Step 2: Register on the GST Portal
Registration begins with filling out basic details on the GST portal, including the type of entity, entity name, PAN number, and the state/UT where the business is located. This initial information is crucial for successful registration.
Step-3: OTP-based Verification
Registration is linked to the applicant’s PAN. To proceed, it’s necessary to link the PAN with the applicant’s Aadhar, mobile number, and email for OTP verification.
Step-4: TRN Generation
Upon entering the PAN, OTPs are sent to the registered mobile number and email. After validating these OTPs, a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) is generated. This TRN is crucial for continuing the application and is valid for 15 days, necessitating the completion of the process within this timeframe.
Step 5: Complete the GST Application Form
Log in to the GST portal with the TRN and access the GST REG-01 application form. Fill in the required details and upload the necessary documents, including information about the business, promoters/partners, location, products/services, and authorised individuals. Once filled, the form must be verified using the authorised signatory’s DSC or EVC.
Step-6: Issuance of GSTIN
After the form and documents are submitted, the application is processed typically within 10 to 15 days. Following successful verification, a unique GSTIN is assigned to the business, which can be used to check GST registration status and meet other GST-related requirements.

Benefits of GST Registration for Businesses

Registering for GST brings several advantages to businesses:

The GST Certificate

The GST Certificate is an essential document issued by the Indian government to businesses registered under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. It verifies a business’s registration and includes details like the GST identification number, business name, and address.
Importance of the GST Certificate

Authority to Collect Tax: Authorizes businesses to collect GST from customers.

Tax Credit Utilization: Enables businesses to claim tax credits on operational expenses and purchases.

Additionally, the GST Certificate plays a crucial role in several other areas:

Loan Applications: These are required by financial institutions to verify a business’s legitimacy.

Government Tenders: Needed to demonstrate tax compliance when participating in government procurement processes.

Enhanced Market Presence: Demonstrates a commitment to adhering to national tax laws, bolstering market reputation.

Penalties for Failing to Register for GST

For Non-Payment or Underpayment: Should a taxpayer fail to pay or underpay the required tax, a penalty equal to 10% of the due tax amount is imposed. It should be noted that although there is no fee for GST registration, non-compliance penalties can be substantial.

Deliberate Tax Evasion: In cases where an individual or business intentionally evades paying taxes, a penalty of 100% of the evaded tax amount is applied.
