For those who are not familiar with trusts, the notion of transferring their wealth to a trustee may not seem to be the optimal solution. In those cases, a private foundation can provide many of the same benefits as a trust. The foundation is a structure that exists in civil law and the founder may be more accustomed to operating within a civil law framework.
